Introducing FireProtect 2 AC: mains-powered fire detector

FireProtect 2 series continues to expand. Ajax Systems announces FireProtect 2 AC, the mains-powered fire detector. The release includes five models with a different set of sensors:

FireProtect 2 AC (Heat/Smoke/CO)

Wireless mains-powered fire detector with heat, smoke, and CO sensors

FireProtect 2 AC (Heat/Smoke)

Wireless mains-powered fire detector with heat and smoke sensors

FireProtect 2 AC (Heat/CO)

Wireless mains-powered fire detector with heat and CO sensors

FireProtect 2 AC (Heat)

Wireless mains-powered fire detector with heat sensor

FireProtect 2 AC (CO)

Wireless mains-powered fire detector with CO sensor

New fire detectors are the next big break for our partners. It’s an opportunity to reach the countries where standards strictly require the 110–240 V~ mains connection. Installation and security companies can now expand their business into the most regulated market. With FireProtect 2 AC, it’s possible to cover residential objects in Australia, the United States, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Netherlands, and more.

AC detectors comply with:

  • EN 14604:2005/AC:2008
  • EN 50291-1:2018
  • EN 54-5:2017+A1:2018
  • BS 5839 (part 6, grade D1)
  • UL 268 / CAN/ULC S529 — in progress
  • UL 2075 / CAN/ULC S588 — in progress

All FireProtect 2 AC models will be available for order from authorized Ajax Systems partners in the 4th quarter of 2023.

Enclosure reinvented

AC fire detectors inherited all FireProtect 2 signature features. The patented smoke chamber is dustproof and does not require regular clean-ups. Two A1R-class thermistors detect heat alarms. And the built-in chemical CO sensor detects a dangerous carbon monoxide level in the air. Each detector is traditionally equipped with a powerful 85 dB siren to alert about fire threats with different patterns for each alarm or event, so it’s easy to recognize the type of alarm and react accordingly.

The detector is powered by 110–240 V~ mains and includes a sealed backup battery. Even in a power outage, the detector continues to operate, ensuring quick and reliable fire detection throughout its 10-year lifespan.

The SmartBracket mounting panel became completely reinvented as the most convenient way for PROs to install a mains-powered detector. It consists of a mounting part and a protective lid to isolate an installer from direct contact with electrical wiring. Inside, it has the lever-actuated WAGO 221 connectors familiar to every industry expert. Terminals are located inside SmartBracket and can be easily removed and switched back during the wiring. SmartBracket also has an extra space to swap terminals for bigger ones if necessary.

It takes only 90 seconds to install the detector with no need to disassemble the enclosure. The connection process with WAGO does not require a screwdriver: just pull the lever up, insert a conductor, and push the lever back down. It takes one move to secure the detector on ceilings with a special lock. An installer can easily level the enclosure at 90° angles after mounting.

Enhanced wireless interconnection

AC detectors receive an upgraded interconnected fire alarm feature — a fallback interconnection. Additionally to the primary interconnection via Ajax hub, new fire detectors, just like the hub, can listen to the encrypted radio channel and activate a synchronous fire alarm directly detector-to-detector. Such a feature is mandatory for the United Kingdom and Australia.

A fallback interconnection is a backup to the primary one via the hub. Both interconnections work in parallel. So if one of the fire detectors in the system detects a threat, it sends an alarm to the hub via Jeweller radio protocol using primary interconnection. The hub initiates an interconnected alarm within 20 seconds, three times faster than EN 14604 requires. All information is immediately available in Ajax apps: initiating detector’s location, fire alarm type, and exact alarm time. Meanwhile, the initiating detector activates the fallback interconnection, directly sending the alarm to other fire detectors. Even in the worst-case scenario of losing connection with the hub, the interconnected fire alarm activates within a minute. So there is no chance of missing a fire alarm.

An interconnected fire alarm can also be activated by pressing ManualCallPoint, a wireless wall-mounted button for manual fire alarm activation.

Life-saving technologies

FireProtect 2 AC is a part of the Ajax ecosystem. Each element of the ecosystem has self-diagnosis and is constantly supervised. The device exchanges data with a hub at a distance of 1,700 m via Jeweller radio protocol. The hub has two-way communication with Ajax Cloud to provide real-time information to Ajax apps. The device does not require periodic manual testing to ensure it is connected and operates properly — the Ajax system supervises its state. With instant notifications, each system user will be informed about the alarm or malfunctions to get services in time.

As a part of the Ajax ecosystem, fire detectors can interact with automation devices, cameras, and PhOD detectors of the MotionCam series (both wired and wireless). A fire alarm can trigger scenarios that de-energize the possible source of the alarm, unlock emergency exits, and activate emergency lights. At the same time, MotionCam (PhOD) or Ajax cameras provide visual verification into apps to identify the cause of the alarm.
