From doorbells to soldering stations: Ajax Systems internship students presented their projects

The fourth and fifth cohorts of Mechanical Engineering Internship, part of the Ajax Next program, have completed their studies. The participants showcased 12 engineering projects, including a robotic manipulator, an automated soldering station, and plastic enclosures designed for mass production.

Both cohorts studied at the Mechanical Design & Robotics Lab, which Ajax Systems established at the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" in September 2025. Ajax Systems engineers and university lecturers mentored the participants.

Some students completed the Automation track of the internship. Over nine months, they worked on integrated test stands — functional modules that combine mechanical components, detectors, actuators, and controls into a single system.

The track aims to provide the participants with hands-on experience in developing devices from scratch. They go through every stage,— from creating the initial concepts and selecting components to assembly, testing, and prototype presentation.

Through the studies, the participants worked with metal and 3D-printed parts, pneumatics, servo motor, stepper motors, encoders, and sensors.

The final projects reflected the full engineering development cycle that the students had completed. They presented:

  • RubiPy, a robotic manipulator designed to solve a Rubik's Cube, featuring six stepper motors, a computer vision system, and a web interface;
  • an automated laboratory lift for precise positioning along the Z-axis;
  • an automated soldering station for low-volume assembly of printed circuit boards ;
  • an automatic feeder with precise dosing and an anti-jamming mechanism;
  • a planetary gearbox along with a complete set of engineering calculations and a 3D-printed prototype.

Device Development track

The second group of students followed the Device Development track. The key engineering challenge was to create enclosures suitable for mass production using plastic injection molding.

The participants learned how to design enclosures for consumer electronics under real-world manufacturing constraints. They gained hands-on experience in SolidWorks, studied design principles for injection-molded parts, and explored material properties to minimize manufacturing defects.

As a result, the students developed enclosure designs for the following devices:

  • set-top boxes;
  • compact MP3 players;
  • dashcams;
  • power banks;
  • doorbells;
  • phone stands;
  • calculators;
  • webcams;
  • flashlights.
