In the UK, local regulators require residential buildings to be equipped with EN 54-certified fire and life safety systems. After a recent refurbishment, a multi-family residential block urgently needed to replace a removed system with a new solution to restore compliance.
Challenge
Delivering a compliant, non-invasive fire and life safety solution in a short timespan
During refurbishment, the residential block had removed its old fire and life safety system and urgently needed a replacement that met all local regulatory requirements. Since residents were already living in the block, the installation had to be completed quickly to minimize disruption to their everyday lives.
Traditional wired systems were not a viable choice. Such solutions require extensive drilling, which could damage the newly renovated interiors. Moreover, installing and configuring dozens of wired devices across multiple floors would take long days — if not weeks — which wasn't an option for this time-sensitive project.
Solution
Wireless EN 54-certified system with fast installation and off-site configuration
To reliably protect every household in the block, the Universal Fire and Security Ltd service provider offered Ajax EN54 Line. This fire detection and alarm system is certified to EN 54 standards and meets the required UK safety regulations. At the same time, the fully wireless design of all components — the CIE, resettable buttons, detectors, and sounders — made the system an ideal fit for this invasion-sensitive project.
The system's core is EN54 Fire Hub Jeweller, a touchscreen control and indicating equipment (CIE). Its large, colour display makes on-site fire safety management both informative and intuitive.
The CIE and the entire system work in sync with Ajax apps that help not only keep the system in sight but also speed up system setup. With key parameters pre-configured and the option to fine-tune settings remotely, technicians spent less time on site during installation.
In common areas such as hallways and staircases, EN54 FireProtect (Heat) Jeweller and EN54 FireProtect (Smoke) Jeweller devices detect fire threats at the earliest signs, be it a wisp of smoke or a sudden temperature spike. If a resident spots danger first, they can raise the alarm themselves using the ManualCallPoint (Red) Jeweller button. Within just three seconds, the system activates EN54 FireProtect (Sounder) Jeweller devices with their piercing alerts that can be heard in every home, ensuring all residents are immediately warned.
Universal Fire and Security Ltd made full use of the Ajax system's capabilities to complete the entire project in just two days. Mounting the devices on the spot took minimum time thanks to built-in communicators and complete sets with all necessary fasteners. Intuitive Ajax apps also simplified setup, minimizing effort for installers: no complicated programming or lengthy device testing was required.
