Line crossing detection — a new feature for even more accurate video monitoring

Ajax introduces Line crossing detection, a new video analytics feature that brings greater precision to video surveillance. It identifies objects moving across a configurable virtual line, making monitoring more focused and relevant to a site's activity. The new feature allows users to customize video surveillance rules and receive only the necessary notifications.

Line crossing detection enables users to draw a virtual line within the camera frame and specify how the system should respond when an object crosses it. The system can either send a notification or raise an alarm while recording footage in the archive when a person, animal, or vehicle crosses the specified line in a defined direction. Additionally, it is possible to activate sirens upon line crossing to provide an immediate on-site response.

This approach shifts the focus from general motion detection to specific boundary violations. Instead of responding to any movement within the camera frame, the system monitors only predefined lines and directions. Users can create up to four separate lines per camera, each with its own direction and conditions — enabling precise monitoring of entry points or exit routes. For example, the system can notify users only when someone enters a restricted area while ignoring movement in the opposite direction. This flexibility improves monitoring efficiency without requiring additional devices.

Users can specify which object types should trigger an alarm — if Line crossing detection is configured to respond only to people, the system ignores vehicles or animals crossing the virtual line.

The new feature makes notifications more selective and relevant. Users receive alerts only when specific objects cross defined lines in set directions, avoiding triggers from acceptable movement within the camera frame. Each event includes information about which line was crossed and what type of object triggered it. This enables users to quickly assess the situation and respond accordingly.

For optimal performance, detection lines should be placed away from frame edges and drawn long enough.

To access the new feature, wired cameras must run firmware version 2.569 or later, NVRs must run firmware version 2.565 or later, and Ajax apps must be updated to the following or later versions:
