Alpine Jet Thrills is a privately owned jet boat company that has been offering tours on the Waimakariri River, New Zealand, since 1984. Based in Canterbury, it is a local tourism leader shaped by the heritage of the region where jet boating began. It is also the first and only commercial airboat operator in New Zealand.
The company stores its fleet and equipment across multiple buildings and operates the Jet Boat Museum, an exhibition dedicated to the evolution of jet boating. To protect these facilities and ensure peace of mind, the company needed a comprehensive security solution.
Challenge
Protecting a remote, multi-building site against intrusion
With the company's property spread across multiple buildings, a key challenge was securing the entire site with a single system. The site's remote location made a wired system impractical and costly, while metal walls in some buildings posed a risk of unstable wireless communication.
The client also needed full oversight of the facility without relying on on-site guards. That's why the security solution had to be both informative and easy to manage for the facility owner and managers.
Solution
Wireless security system with long-range communication and tiered motion detection
Balloch Security, the client's security provider, addressed the challenges of protecting the jet boat company by deploying a wireless Ajax system. Its strong, long-range radio coverage made it an ideal fit for the multi-building site. Although more cost-effective than wired alternatives, the solution delivered reliable protection across all facilities and offered valuable features for the system owners.
The system is powered by Hub 2 Plus Jeweller, a control panel that supports up to 200 devices, which makes it well-suited for multi-site projects. With four communication channels available, the hub automatically switches to the strongest connection. This ensures the system remains online without interruptions, which is especially important in remote locations where a single channel may be unreliable. To further amplify the hub's reach, Balloch Security added ReX 2 Jeweller, which helps system devices communicate even through obstacles.
Each building is secured with a multi-layered motion detection system. Outdoor protection relies on MotionCam Outdoor HighMount (PhOD) Jeweller and DualCurtain Outdoor Jeweller — volumetric and curtain-type detectors. They reliably detect people from their first steps onto the site, filtering out swaying trees and other harmless movement. MotionCam detector's photo verification adds another layer of confidence by delivering images within seconds, enabling users to respond only to genuine threats.
Indoor protection is handled by MotionProtect Jeweller. These detectors are installed throughout all secured buildings to protect stored equipment and museum exhibits. Using PIR detection and smart false alarm filtering, they instantly spot unauthorized movement after hours.
Besides precise detection, the Ajax system also provides strong deterrence. Outdoor StreetSiren Jeweller emits a powerful audible signal and flashing LED alerts, instantly signaling intruders that they've been detected and scaring them off to prevent further damage.
The security system can be managed both locally and remotely. On-site staff use KeyPad Jeweller to change security modes with secure code-based authorization. At the same time, owners and managers rely on Ajax apps to check system statе, monitor activity, and stay informed about any incidents.
Why Ajax
Stable communication across walls and distances. Ajax systems deliver long-range connectivity strong enough to cover multiple buildings with a single hub. When metal walls, equipment, or other obstacles interfere with the signal, range extenders expand coverage without slowing down event delivery.
Cost-efficient protection for remote sites. Where cabling is impractical, wireless Ajax systems provide comparable reliability without costly or time-consuming installation. Long-range communication, encrypted data transmission via proprietary radio protocols, and advanced sabotage protection ensure dependable security at a lower cost.
