Lidl
Partner: VPS Group
Lidl is an international discount supermarket chain founded in Germany. It operates around 13,000 stores across more than 30 countries and is known for offering groceries and non-food products at affordable prices.
Challenge
Protecting high-value assets on a dynamic, large-scale construction site
While laying the groundwork for a future Lidl branch in France, the client sought a flexible security solution for its construction site. Valuable assets, including solar panels and building supplies stored by subcontractors, had to be protected against theft, trespassing, and accidental damage outside working hours.
Given the site's scale and constantly changing layout, traditional fixed security systems were not a practical option. Such systems are time-consuming and costly to deploy, difficult to adapt as construction progresses, and likely to disrupt ongoing work whenever the site layout changes.
Solution
VPS's market-first RDTa solution powered by Ajax intrusion protection, video surveillance, fire safety, and automation
To find the optimal solution for its construction site, Lidl partnered with VPS Group, Europe's leading provider of temporary security and fire systems. VPS designed a tailored, end-to-end solution that integrates monitoring and detection technologies powered by an Ajax system — from intrusion protection and video surveillance to fire and life safety and automation. Designed for rapid deployment, the solution matches the demands of a dynamic construction site, keeping it protected throughout every stage of the project.
The VPS solution combines two complementary layers of security controls into a single integrated system: RDTa (Rapidly Deployable Tower for Assets), which provides external video surveillance, and Smart Hub+, which delivers internal fire and leak detection throughout the building under construction.
RDTa is a fully autonomous, modular surveillance tower equipped with TurretCam HL cameras on all four sides. Covering an area of up to 328 ft, it delivers AI-powered, day-and-night surveillance of high-value outdoor assets. Built around an Ajax battery-powered hub, the tower does not require mains power or frequent site visits, reducing logistics, vehicle movements, and environmental impact.
In the event of an intrusion, the cameras' white-light illumination and an Ajax outdoor siren work together to deter intruders. This proved its value on the very first night after installation, when an attempted intrusion was successfully prevented. No further incidents have been recorded since.
More on VPS Rapidly Deployable Tower – Assets (RDTa)
Inside the building, the system protects against water damage and fire. LeaksProtect Jeweller and FireProtect 2 (Heat/Smoke/CO) Jeweller detectors are installed throughout the future supermarket to provide early detection of water leaks, water ingress, and the earliest signs of fire.

Regardless of project scale, the solution is easy to deploy for temporary protection. RDTa towers feature a modular design, Ajax devices require no enclosure disassembly, and water leak detectors require no mounting at all. A single professional can deploy the entire system, while components can be easily relocated or reconfigured as the construction site evolves.

Protection starts on day one of construction and continues long after project completion. The same solution can be seamlessly expanded with additional wired and wireless devices, evolving from a temporary construction security system into a permanent, enterprise-grade solution for the operational supermarket.
Once deployed, the system requires minimal maintenance. Long-life battery technology, combined with remote monitoring and configuration, significantly reduces on-site service visits, lowering operational expenses, vehicle movements, and associated carbon emissions. Designed to withstand harsh construction environments, weather-resistant devices continue to perform reliably in dust, rain, and extreme conditions.
The result is uninterrupted protection throughout the asset lifecycle, which enables Lidl to focus on delivering the project while the security solution safeguards the site against theft, vandalism, fire, and water damage.
Why Ajax
Fast and easy to deploy. An Ajax system can be deployed in just a few hours. Its wireless design makes it easy to relocate and reconfigure devices as construction progresses and the site layout changes.
Built for harsh environments. Dust- and water-resistant by design, Ajax outdoor devices withstand demanding construction site conditions while delivering reliable performance in any weather.
Ready to grow with the site. Ajax systems adapt as projects evolve. Once construction is complete, the same system can be seamlessly expanded with additional devices and reconfigured to protect the finished facility.
